In today’s media-driven world, it can be hard to step away from screens to get an actual sense of what is really going on. “You can’t control what you hear. You can only control how you react,” says pop singer Kendra Erika.

In “Lay It On Me,” her new age track that combines elements of EDM, pop, and dubstep, she sings how she is ready for the truth, even if it hurts. “Truth will only hurt for a little while. In time, the pain will subside and the relief that comes from living in authenticity will feel a thousand times greater than living in denial.”

She explains that she arrived at this need for truth through a past relationship she describes as traumatic. “I was reduced to ashes. However, like the phoenix, I began repairing myself.”

She now worries that society is in that same emotionally, mentally, and physically abusive relationship with the truth. “It really lights a fire in me to shed light on this (topic),” she says. 

Produced by Manny Mijares and Ron Reeser, “Lay It On Me,” is a marked detour from her previous club music singles, “Oasis,” “Sublime” and “Under My Skin.” However, Kendra Erika makes it clear that says she’s not stepping away from the dance floor. “On this one, I wanted to make sure the production and sound matched the awakened message. I didn’t want to simply throw words on top of a beat. There will be remixes,” she promises.

“Lay It On Me” is being released through Global Records (a partner of Warner Music) and is available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon, and all other major retailers, as well as through streaming on Pandora and Spotify. It’s music video is on Youtube.

“Being a figure in the public eye is a responsibility,” she continues. “Too many (celebrities) stand behind their precious money making persona and brand. What I’m trying to do is level out the playing field and turn victims into survivors, and celebrities into leaders.” 

Kendra Erika is a South Florida native singer/songwriter. She draws inspiration from artists like Lana Del Rey, Solange, Ellie Goulding, and London Grammar. She implements bold and poetic messages in her music; a concept that has been embraced as something new to club fans.

Her next release will be a cover of Laura Branigan’s eighties hit, “Self Control,” a song Kendra Erika regularly performs at shows. “I have always felt such a connection to the song. The vibe calls out for me to take it to another level.” 

But at the moment, she’s busy promoting the new music video release of “Lay It On Me.”

“I’m excited that we created this strong visual to support the song and help get the message out,” she continues. “The truth is the things we glorify don’t need to validate us. We can validate ourselves if we allow our minds to toughen up.”
