Straight Teeth and a Beautiful Smile is Not a Dream

Crooked teeth is a very common problem. First of all it may look like an aesthetic disadvantage. But it's not all about the beauty of your smile. In fact, crooked teeth may cause other problems as well. Properly aligned teeth provide support for each other and for the entire mouth, making normal daily activities, such as eating and speaking, possible. Crooked teeth, however, do not provide sufficient support and can cause jaw and muscle strain, leaving the mouth vulnerable to injury. People who have crooked teeth may also suffer from tooth pain or sensitivity and may be at an increased risk for tooth decay and gingivitis.

So, what can help us with this problem? The answer is – braces. It's the most common solution. Teeth straightening is becoming one of the most popular and sought-after cosmetic dentistry treatments. Traditionally, getting braces has been considered a straightening treatment for children and teenagers, but more and more adults these days are interested in improving their smiles.

What type of braces can you choose from?

Metal braces/Traditional braces

These are the metal brackets and wires that most people picture when they hear the word "braces." However, modern brackets are smaller and less noticeable than the notorious "metal-mouth" braces that many adults remember. Plus, new heat-activated archwires use your body heat to help teeth move more quickly and less painfully than in the past. Metal braces, which are the least expensive type, can have a colored bands, which give kids a chance to express themselves. Metal braces are the most noticeable type of braces.

Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, except that they have tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend in to the teeth. Some even use tooth-colored wires to be even less visible. Less noticeable than metal braces and they move teeth much faster than clear plastic aligners (Invisalign). But they are more expensive than metal braces.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are the same as traditional metal braces, except that the brackets and wires are placed on the inside of teeth. They are invisible from the outside. But it's really difficult to clean them. They are more expensive and can be more uncomfortable at first.

Invisalign

Invisalign consists of a series of 18 to 30 custom-made, mouth guard-like clear plastic aligners. The aligners are removable and are replaced every 2 weeks. They are almost invisible. Patients can eat and drink whatever they want. But they won't work for serious dental problems. Only available for adults and teens, not for children. Invisaligncan be easily lost and costly to replace. And treatment may potentially take longer.
