What You Have To Do After Tooth Implantation

Dental implants is the best solution for people who, for various reasons, have lost their teeth. Modern implants keep the dentition, make your smile attractive and most importantly, they give you oral health. Here's a brief description of the procedure for implantation:

After  consultation and diagnostic tests, your dentist will remove the aching tooth or teeth. The implant post will be implant in the jawbone. It will replace the tooth root. The next part is external. Abutment and implant connected with the help of a threaded or cone connection. After that comes the last and final part - a tooth restoration. The tooth restoration is fixed up to the abutment. The dental technician  selects the desired color and shape of the crown. A tooth restoration can be a crown, bridge or an implant supported denture.

But, how long the dental implants will serve you? And what problems can arise with them? First, a quality implant serves from 10-20 years. More than 95 percent of all dental implant procedures are completed without complication, it's wise to be aware of what can go wrong, since a rapid response to any problems will enable surgeons to take corrective actions. Most problems are minor and easily rectified. However, if left untreated, even minor problems can threaten the long-term viability of the implant.

Here is the general advice dentists give their patients in order to successfully complete the implantation procedure:

1. Instruction on Day of Surgery

  • Bite down gently but firmly on the gauze packs that have been placed over the surgical areas, making sure they remain in place. Do not change them for the first hour unless bleeding occurs. The packs may be gently removed after one hour.

  • Do not disturb the surgical area today. Do NOT rinse vigorously or probe the area with any object. You may brush your teeth gently. Smoking will retard healing, causing increased discomfort and increased chance of dry sockets.

  • You should brush your teeth the night of surgery, but be gentle around the surgical sites. If there is minimal bleeding, saltwater rinses may begin 24 hours after surgery (mix 1 tablespoon of salt with 8 ounces of water.)

  • Swelling is a normal occurrence after surgery and will not reach its maximum until 2-3 days after. It can be minimized by using a cold pack, ice bag or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel and applied firmly to the cheek adjacent to the surgical area. Unfortunately most oral surgery is accompanied by some degree of discomfort. You will usually have a prescription for pain medication.

  • Eat any nourishing food that can be taken with comfort. Avoid extremely hot foods.

2. Instructions for the Second and Third Days

  • Keeping your mouth clean after surgery is essential.

  • Normal healing after placement of dental implants should be as follows: The first two days after surgery are generally the most uncomfortable and there is usually some swelling. On the third day you should be more comfortable and although still swollen, can usually begin a more substantial diet.

  • Sore throat. This is not uncommon after oral surgery. The muscles get swollen and this may make swallowing painful. This should go away on its own in 2-3 days.

In the end, your case is individual. Do not accept well-intended advice from friends. Discuss your problem with your surgeon!  For example, in NYC Dental Implants Center you will  receive an honest and considered opinion about your dental health and Dr. Rahmani will only suggest dental implant treatment if he truly believes this will provide optimal results.
