Grant, rang up $15,625 in a huge, four-day Desert Riches Auction held January 31st thru February 3rd by Holabird Western Americana Collections, LLC.

The event was packed with more than 2,100 lots in numerous collecting categories to include mining, gold, numismatics, scripophily, Native Americana, railroadiana, philatelic and general Americana. The first three days were live sessions, hosted in Holabirds Reno gallery. The fourth day was a timed-only session, hosted exclusively on iCollector.com and LiveAuctioneers.com.

We chose the name Desert Riches to honor the gold specimens, stock certificates, mining artifacts and railroad pieces in this sale from the California desert mining camps in Inyo County and Death Valley, as well as from Arizona and Nevada, said Fred Holabird, the president and owner of Holabird Western Americana Collections, LLC. Overall it was a tremendous success.

The Samuel Clemens receipt from the Territory of Nevada House of Representatives in Carson City, dated Dec. 20, 1862, reads in part, To the Territorial Auditor, We hereby certify that Saml. L. Clemens is entitled to the sum of Two Hundred and Forty Dollars for forty days services as Reporter etc. for the House. [signed] John H. Mills, Speaker. Clemens signed the reverse side.

Also sold was a Pony Express Virginia City (Nev.) cover sent the same month Clemens arrived in town to work for the Territorial Enterprise, in September 1862. Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Virginia Pony Express began operations on Aug. 8, 1862, using the 10-cent fee for a half-ounce letter. The rate increased to 25 cents in Jan. 1863, making this an 1862 specimen. It gaveled for $2,875.

The pair of 1871 documents appointing the melter and refiner to the Carson City, Nevada Mint surfaced from a prominent Nevada banking family. The document pair reflected the original appointment as Melter and Refiner of Moses D. Wheeler prior to June 3, 1871. The second document formally appointed Robert P. Andrews to the position on December 12, 1871.

Following are additional highlights from the auction. All prices quoted include the buyers premium. Online bidding was via iCollector.com, Invaluable.com and LiveAuctionbeers.com.

FEED.art launches a community-focused cafe filling the niche of an alcohol-free, after-work hangout space. cafeGIANT offers a small storefront stage, a stool, a spotlight, and 15-minute signup slots to singers, storytellers, and other artists to perform to a local houseand global livestream audience. The glass facade tiny cafe allows acoustic sets to be seen and heard from State Street; a webcam lets the world enjoy the shows. Behind the little window where guests order drinks, cafeGIANT opens up to reveal a grand space with 30 high ceilings and art shows blending digital and traditional art, and equipment and staging for multi-media artists to produce performances.

Minervas Teas is tickled to unveil her newest blend at FEED Media Arts Center made just for this Valentines Day. Flir-Tea: a cup of sass right in your hands. Bags of your favorites will also be available for purchase.

Along cafeGIANTs east wall, Pulp! Video Lab has installed The Hideout, an overgrown rec room entertainment center with dozens of TVs framing the stage. Here, VJs come from across the States to mix visuals for The FEED Sessions.

Created by Pulp! Video Lab and directed and live mixed by Betty Sweaters, The FEED Sessions is a live performance series that celebrates visual creators. The shows unique format flips the script on traditional music performance shows by putting the VJ front and center, having the music serve as the backdrop to the visuals rather than the visuals as the backdrop to the music. Fords hand shows in the pop-painterly animations and the altered TVs themselves. The artist extends animated paintings beyond the glowing screens with drawings splaying all over the TVs. Fords spidery linework is extended by rainbow web fractures in the displayssome formed by accident, others by intent.

Brad Fords ambitious new work is accompanied by a selection of earlier works, both digital and physical, installed throughout cafeGIANT: the newest project from FEED.art. cafeGIANT welcomes guests in Eries Downtown ARTs District to a cozy storefront coffee shop with a small stage. My brother and I knew the drill and patiently answered each. Finally, our mother was formally admitted to the hospital and her condition stabilizedWithin weeks, Mom took her final breath and, with it, my one link to goodness was gone forever.
The presentation will take place at the 57th Annual Four Chaplains Banquet at the IATSE Ballroom on February 4th, 5:30 p.m. (ET) before an expected audience of 300 veterans, civic and religious leaders.

The event honors the 82nd anniversary of the loss of the famed "Four Chaplains" during WWII and the 250th Anniversary of the Army Chaplains Corps.

"I am truly humbled and honored by this recognition of my lifes work, noted Rabbi Robinson. He added, I emphasize that my work is not done. I continue to beseech all stakeholders to complete the tribute to military chaplains as planned for Arlington National Cemetery. I urge patriotic citizens to reach out to their congressperson to take action to approve the project.

A resident of Centerville, Massachusetts, Rear Admiral Harold L. Robinson was honored for his service as Navy Chaplain and continued service upon retirement. Rabbi Robinson served as a Naval Reserve Chaplain for 36 years, of which 26 were with the Marine Corps.

Among this who perished were four chaplains, a Catholic priest, two Protestant ministers and a Rabbi. The four Army officers were noted for their heroism in helping as many passengers escape the doomed ship as possible, offering up their own life jackets, and were last seen praying together.

The heroism of the Four Chaplains became an iconic WWII story celebrated each year in early February by veterans, civic, and religious organizations.

The Chaplains Hill, Arlington National Cemetery project, championed by the National Conference on Ministry to the Armed Forces (NCMAF), is an effort to add 81 names of chaplains who died in service to the Protestant and Catholic Memorials on Section 2 of Arlington National Cemetery. This would honor and include the chaplains who died in service from Korea to Iraq and Afghanistan not already listed.

The NCMAFs membership is comprised of nearly 150 religious organizations who endorse military and Veterans Affairs hospital chaplains.

Rabbi Robinson was Rabbi of Temple Israel of Gary, Ind., 1974-1977, the Cape Cod Synagogue (1977-1998) and B'nai Zion Congregation in Shreveport, La, 1998-2006. He served for seven years as Chair of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, Cape and Islands Advisory Council. Rear Adm. Robinson served as the Director of The Jewish Welfare Board Jewish Chaplains Council in New York City 2006-2016 and as part time instructor of Doctoring at Alpert Medical School, Brown University 2017-2019.

Starting on January 27what would have been Jacksons 23rd birthday--Scott began a daily catch campaign with the aim of fostering connection, healing, and positive memories with individuals across the nation. The campaign will also share the message of the Foundation. Jackson Yelle was killed by an impaired driver in 2023.

Playing catch was one of the things Jackson and I enjoyed doing together. When I heard about Ethan Bryans book A Year of Playing Catch (https://amzn.to/4aALrfg), I wanted to make a daily catch part of the work we do with the Foundation, said Scott, referring to the $18,000 the Jackson Yelle Foundation donated to Major League Baseballs Nike Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI).

The Catch2Heal campaign seemed like a natural way to kick off our 2025 efforts, which will include visiting 12 MLB cities and donating to 12 more MLB Nike RBI programs, said Scott.

Scott's mission as part of the Catch2Heal campaign is to dedicate at least 15 minutes each day to playing catch with someone, preferably a different person each day.

Finding someone new to play catch with everyday will be a challenge and Andrea, my wife is on call for those days when nobody is available, said Scott. The weather could also play into it, especially on Cape Cod in January and February. Fortunately, our plans to visit 12 stadiums in the spring could open the door to finding new people to have a catch with.

In addition to visiting MLB ballparks in 12 cities in April, Scott will be traveling to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in March. The Jackson Yelle Foundation will be a co-sponsor of the Fish Like MADD fishing tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Myrtle Beach is where Jackson was struck by the impaired driver in April 2023.

We created the Jackson Yelle Foundation to help causes to benefit young peopleboys and girls. Given what happened with Jackson, the fishing tournament will be another great place to spread the healing message and get in a few more games of catch with new friends, said Scott.

To follow Scotts 365 Catch2Heal campaign, the Jackson Yelle Foundation has set up an Instagram page at https://www.instagram.com/catch2heal/.

Prices quoted in this report are in Canadian dollars and include an 18 percent buyers premium.

One of the Mantles had a grade of PSA 1.5 Fair and carried a pre-sale estimate of $30,000-$40,000. It sold for $50,150. The other card had an even lesser grade PSA 1 Poor but bidders blasted through the $15,000-$20,000 estimate for a final selling price of $38,350. The high prices underscored the rarity and popularity of that particular card as well as the Topps 1952 set overall.

The inaugural January 25th Sports auction proved that the market for pre-1980 sports cards is stronger than ever, with many estimates being met and even exceeded for top lots, said Ben Pernfuss, Miller & Millers Consignment Director for the sale.

Household names like Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig, captured the spotlight and drove impressive bidding on unique signed baseballs, found footage and iconic cards. A total of 259 lots all sports-related, with many rare and highly collectible examples came up for bid.

The enthusiasm for these legendary athletes was palpable, Mr. Pernfuss said, resulting in spirited bidding and strong results. Overall, the sale showcased the continued strength and passion of collectors in this vibrant market.

Following are additional highlights from the auction, one that grossed 448,252. A total of 254 online bidders placed a combined 5,166 bids. 98 percent of all lots were sold, and 50 percent of the top lots exceeded estimates. Online bidding was provided by LiveAuctioneers.com and the Miller & Miller website (MillerandMillerAuctions.com).

A 1951 Bowman partial set of 155 baseball cards (including the rare #253 Mickey Mantle rookie card, graded PSA 4.5 VG-EX+, a PSA graded 6 EX-MT Ted Williams card and a PSA graded 5 Yogi Berra card, plus other Hall of Famers), sold for $38,350, besting the $25,000 high estimate.

One of the real sleepers of the sale was 3 minutes and 3 seconds of actual 16mm film footage of a 1929 pre-season baseball game played between the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals, at Cardinal Field in Avon Park, Florida. The film featured at-bats by both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Assigned a pre-sale estimate of $2,000-$3,000, the film gaveled for $15,340.

A 1966 Topps #35 Bobby Orr rookie card, graded PSA 6 EX-MT, sold within estimate for $15,340. Orr is regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time, with unmatched speed, skill and offensive ability. The card showed a crisp image of a hockey legend in his first season.

A Worth Official League baseball signed circa 1927-1930 by Yankees slugger Lou Gehrig, with a cardboard box showing a label from the New Rochelle (New York) Book Store (near where Gehrig grew up), finished at $12,980, about as expected. Included was a full PSA/DNA LOA and JSA LOA, a PSA/DNA autograph grade of 8, a baseball grade of 6 and an overall grade of 7.

A circa 1909-11 T206 Ty Cobb Red Portrait tobacco card, an iconic card in the world of baseball collecting from one the hobbys most sought after sets, fetched $12,980, more than doubling the $5,000 high estimate. The card featured a "Cycle Cigarettes" advertisement on the back, hence the name "Cycle-Back". It was graded PSA 1.5 Fair condition, a recent grade.

A baseball dual signed in blue ink by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, reportedly signed at a late 1920s Canadian stop of the duo's "barnstorming" tours, changed hands for $29,500, doubling the $15,000 high estimate. Ruth signed on the "Sweet Spot" position, with Gehrig on the side panel. The ball was a Spalding "Babe Ruth Home Run Special" PSA/DNA and JSA authenticated ball.

A 1986-87 Fleer #57 Michael Jordan rookie card, widely considered the most desirable Jordan rookie card, accurately depicting one of the greatest basketball players in the world and a must-have for basketball card collectors, graded Beckett 8 in Near Mint-Mint condition, hit $8,850.

A 1964-65 Topps "Tall Boys" complete 110 hockey card set, a highly sought after and visually appealing set featuring many of the game's greats from the day, including Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, Jean Beliveau, Tim Horton and others, was bid to $8,260 against a high estimate of $6,000. Collectors saw it as a desirable set from a key time in hockey's history.

The 225-card sheet was in excellent condition and measured 43 inches by 56 ½ inches. The Gretzky rookie card was mint and without flaw. Blank backed sheets are part of the printing process.

The auction was loaded with an extraordinary array of items that include an impressive selection of Asian art, timeless 19th century furniture, fine and decorative arts and collectible sports memorabilia. In all, close to 800 premier lots crossed the auction block. January 15th featured many fine Asian items, while January 16th showcased a wonderful array of fine art from many established estates.

The full-length, life-size oil on canvas portrait painting by Thomas Gibson was the overall top lot of the two days. Measuring an impressive 68 1/4 inches tall by 44 ¼ inches wide (canvas, minus the frame), the work was titled Lady Bridget Daughter of John First Earl Poulett and Wife of Polexfen Bastard Esq. It carried a pre-sale estimate of $2,000-$4,000, but bidders pushed that to $36,300.

The French School oil on canvas painting, titled simply Portrait of a Young Man, was a bust portrait, apparently unsigned, that had a canvas size of 23 inches by 19 inches and was housed in a frame measuring 28 inches by 24 inches. The work came into the sale with a modest estimate of just $500-$700 but, like the Gibson portrait, bidders blasted through expectations to finish at $9,680.

Pointelin" and dated lower left, had a $2,000-$3,000 estimate but realized $9,680. The work was 35 ½ inches by 51 inches (canvas, less frame).

An American Continental currency $20 bank note dated May 10, 1775 (Friedberg CC-9), printed on marbled polychrome paper sailed past its $1,000-$2,000 estimate to ring up $7,865. The paper for the note was supplied by statesman Benjamin Franklin. The face and back emblems plus the mottos were sketched by Franklin, serial number 7262. The paper note measured 2 ½ inches by 4 ¾ inches.

A pair of French 19th century cast stone winged gargoyle architectural elements, each depicted crouching on square base with their tongues out, accompanied by wood pedestals, bested the $800-$1,600 estimate by garnering $6,050. Each element was 24 ¼ inches tall on a 14-inch-tall stand.

The two-day event featured an impressive selection of Asian art, timeless 19th-century furniture, fine and decorative arts, and sports memorabilia. In a modern society often distracted by commercialism and denominational divides, this book serves as a call to return to the heart of authentic worship focused solely on God.

In "An Ancient Worship Movement," Greg Gordon emphasizes the spiritual depth and transformative power of church practices that predate today's often fragmented ideologies. The book provides a roadmap for believers looking to deepen their relationship with God, reconnect with the essence of worship, and cultivate a community centered around biblical traditions. As our world grows increasingly complex and fast-paced, Gordon's insights offer a refreshing reminder of God's simplicity and love, enabling individuals to renew their passion for discipleship and outreach.

"This book is not just a publication; it's an invitation to a vibrant movement of God's Spirit in our day," says Steve M., a reader and ministry leader. "It's a clarion call to the Western Church to keep Jesus at the center of our fellowship." Individuals and church leaders alike will find actionable steps to mobilize their congregations and communities towards a more profound worship experience, helping to create a Mission House Church dynamic that fosters discipleship and spiritual awakening. Download the book freely in kindle here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CXYQ5241/

The Saturday, February 8th Select Canadiana Furniture, Folk Art, Textiles and Pottery auction is packed with 325 lots of Canadiana, pottery and stoneware, textiles, art glass, lamps and lighting. The Sunday, February 9th Post-War Canadian Folk Art sale is a tidier event, with just 74 lots of post-war Canadian folk art by Harrison, Lewis and others such as Charlie Tanner (1904-1982) and Joe Norris (1924-1996). Like Maud Lewis, both Tanner and Norris hailed from Nova Scotia.

This is a landmark sale, said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions, Ltd. The three signed pieces of furniture include an untouched original schrank in paint, inlaid with initials for the maker John Klempp of Neustadt, Ontario; a Sam Bricker chest of drawers, prominently inlaid MB, known as the dowry chest he made his daughter Mary; and a Quebec arbalète commode with carved feet and leg brackets in superb condition with 200 years of impeccable provenance.

All three are documented, Miller commented, adding, The sale also features other book pieces including rare pottery and folk art. These are online-only auctions. There is no in-person event to attend, but bidders can tune in to the live webcast February 8th and 9th to watch the lots close in real time. Online bidding will be provided by the Miller & Miller Auctions, Ltd. website (MillerandMillerAuctions.com) and LiveAuctioneers.com. Phone and absentee bids accepted.

The Quebec arbalète commode is shown in the book Les Meubles Anciens Du Canada Français by Jean Palardy (p. 303, Plate 495). The consignor said of the piece, "My grandmother received it from a Madame Langlois, who was a good friend. It, in turn, came to my father when my grandmother died, and then came into my possession when my father passed away in 1994." The commode could very well take home top lot honors, with a pre-sale estimate of $30,000-$50,000.

All estimates in this report are in Canadian dollars.

The circa 1880 Ontario schrank (German for cabinet or cupboard), in original paint, has upper panels bearing the initials J and K, for the famed maker John Klempp (1857-1914), a hotel proprietor and cabinetmaker known for his inlaid furniture and smaller objects from 1870-1890. Its in excellent untouched condition and beautifully crafted in pine, with elegant proportions and supported by a scalloped base with a center drop and a carved cartouche (est. $18,000-$25,000).

Lot 198 is an early impressive Adirondack-style hooked rug with a large central image of two stags facing out with their heads turned while they seem to be standing on a bed of leaves against a mottled brown background. The rug, made in Quebec circa 1890-1920, is in good condition, with strong colors, and measures 96 inches by 84 inches. Its currently mounted for display with Velcro strips on a wooden frame but could still be used as a floor carpet (est. $12,000-$15,000).

Lot 217 is an oil on canvas painting by Chief James Beaver (1846-1925) of the Six Nations Reserve in Brantford, Ontario. Painted with precise detail, its an excellent example of the artists work, with a red trimmed white house, a black picket fence and a white church to the side with outbuildings. The circa 1900 work, with strong colors, is 23 ½ inches by 35 ½ inches (canvas, minus frame), and signed lower right Chief Beaver Oil Painter (est. $8,000-$12,000).

On to February 9th, where Maud Lewis is expected to finish atop the leader board again, as she has in so many past Miller & Miller auctions. Her iconic oil on beaverboard titled Three Black Cats was rendered in the second half of 1965. This image is also found in marmalade and white colors. Three Black Cats is a serial image only found in the 1960s. This example, 11 ½ inches by 14 inches, is artist signed and comes with a signed letter of authenticity (est. $20,000-$30,000).

Also expected to do well that day is the 1988 acrylic on canvas by Ted Harrison titled Japan, Harrison's interpretation of the Japanese culture. Through bold colors and dramatic landscapes, he achieves harmony between tradition and modernity, as well as nature and the human spirit. The 24 inch by 36 inch work was inspired by Harrisons travels and appreciation for Japanese aesthetics. Its signed and inscribed Japan and Harrison in Kanji (est. $20,000-$25,000).

Lot 36 is a painted wood carving by Charlie Tanner titled Family Group (Eagle Head, Nova Scotia. 1981). Tanner's carving style is unique and unmistakable. This boldly carved and colorful work, 12 ¼ inches tall and artist signed, portrays an interaction among Tanner's iconic bulbous figures. There are many single figure Tanners, but very few multiple-figure Tanners. This is an exquisite example of folk-art sculpture by one of Canada's finest folk artists (est. $3,500-$5,000).

Lot 55 is an acrylic on canvas painting by Joe Norris titled Swordfish and Harpooners (Lower Prospect, Nova Scotia, circa 1985). Norriss robust paint colors, endearing subject matter and the accurate depiction of life on the ocean are all on display. His attention to detail often included painting the frames of his work with flowers, birds or stars. This work is artist signed lower right (Joe Norris) and is housed in the original 24 ½ inch by 40 ½ inch frame (est. $9,000-$12,000).

Since the early 1980s, Scott has worked for numerous major Western auction companies across the United States. As a result, he has refined and focused his business model to specialize in pre-1900 Western artifacts, as well as Colt and Winchester firearms. He is well respected by his peers and throughout the industry for his involvement in the field.

Scott has a presence at all major firearms shows across the United States. His focus has been greatly enabled by having immediate access to many sources of the grand era of the American cowboy and Native American population.
Keeping the industry in the public eye and maintaining the love and respect for our Western history alive through its artifacts has truly become Scott's dream. This effort underscores the critical role independent hotels play in providing travelers with unique, localized experiences that stand apart from standardized franchise offerings.

Independent hotels account for approximately 30% of the U.S. lodging market, spanning a wide spectrum from budget-friendly accommodations to high-end luxury establishments. Despite their diversity, what unites these hotels is their commitment to serving local communities and visitors with tailored, authentic hospitality. This distinctiveness contrasts with the uniformity often found in branded hotels, which dominate 70% of the market and primarily cater to the upper-tier traveler segments.

"Independent hotels have always been at the forefront of offering personalized, community-centered guest experiences," said a spokesperson for Daryon Hotels International. "With the advent of digital booking platforms, these hotels now enjoy unprecedented visibility and accessibility, enabling them to compete more effectively with larger brands."

The rise of advanced digital booking tools has leveled the playing field for independent hotels, ensuring they are just as discoverable and bookable online as their branded counterparts. This shift has empowered approximately 24,000 independent hotels to attract discerning travelers seeking distinctive stays and authentic local engagement.

However, challenges persist. Many banks remain hesitant to extend loans to independent hotels due to perceived risks. In response, an increasing number of forward-thinking financial institutions recognize the potential of well-managed independent properties. With lower operating costs compared to franchise hotels, these establishments are emerging as viable and attractive investments, particularly when overseen by experienced management teams. DHIs Federation of Independent Hotels aims to bridge these gaps by offering a zero-cost platform for hotel owners to list their properties. Interested hoteliers can join the federation and access its resources at no charge by visiting FedIndie.com. For those seeking optional management services, DHI offers competitive fees that consistently deliver superior results compared to industry standards.

Key Highlights of the Federation of Independent Hotels Initiative:

- Zero Participation Cost: Independent hotels can list their properties for free on FedIndie.com.
- Optional Management Services: Competitive fees with proven track records of success.
- Enhanced Visibility: Leveraging digital tools to maximize online presence and bookings.
- Support for Independent Hotels: Advocacy for financial backing from progressive banks recognizing the value of independent hospitality.

"The Federation of Independent Hotels is more than just a platform; its a movement," said the spokesperson. "Were empowering independent hotel owners to thrive in an industry often dominated by large brands. By offering tools, resources, and support, were ensuring they can continue to provide unparalleled experiences to travelers."

For more information or to join the Federation of Independent Hotels, please visit FedIndie.com or contact Daryon Hotels International at 917-426-9002.
