Coffee is a popular drink for millions of people from all over the world. It seems that each region has its own go-to style of coffee. Even if you are an avid coffee drinker there are probably still different types of coffee that you have never tried before! Vietnamese coffee is likely to fall on this list. If you are curious about what makes Vietnamese coffee special, here are some interesting facts you should know:

1.     Vietnam is the second-largest coffee producer

You might have seen people wearing Vietnamese coffee shirts on the streets and wondered why they are so popular. Well, Vietnam takes the second position in countries that produce large quantities of coffee. It is not only the quantity that makes Vietnamese coffee stand out; the quality is equally good.  When visiting Vietnam, you are likely to see plenty of small family farms that deliver high-quality Vietnam coffee beans.

2.     Vietnamese coffee is a mixture of strong and sweet flavors

In general, Vietnamese coffee is ‘dark roasted’. This means that the coffee has a more bitter taste than what you are used to. Robusta coffee beans contain twice the caffeine as Arabica coffee beans. But when it comes to ready-to-drink coffee products, a medium roast is used in order to take away some of the bitterness. This gives the coffee a more smooth and flavorful taste.

3.     Vietnam produces different types of coffee beans

Currently, Vietnam produces the highest amount of Robusta beans in the world. However, many countries prefer Arabica beans for their milder taste.

But you will be happy to know that there are different types of Vietnam coffee beans. For instance, the country also produces Arabica beans of the Catimor variety.  You can also get novelty varieties such as elephant coffee and weasel coffee in Vietnam.  Both the varieties come from Robusta beans.

4.     Vietnamese coffee can be enjoyed hot or cold

Just like any other types of coffee producers, Vietnam coffee varieties can be enjoyed hot or cold. This means you have a lot of options to choose from depending on your preference. Vietnam’s traditional milk coffee is equally popular  hot or cold with condensed milk, coconut milk and other specialty ingredients for a unique experience.

5.     The brewing process is fun and simple

Wearing Vietnamese coffee shirts is fun, and so is watching how the coffee is brewed. Vietnamese coffee is typically made with the traditional coffee-making device known as a phin filter. This is contrary to many other countries that brew coffee in coffee pots, espresso machines or using a French press. The traditional process uses a phin filter that consists of the phin, base, press, and lid. This device is placed over a mug or cup containing condensed milk or other ingredients.

The process is simple and interesting. It may take a few minutes to complete, but the procedure is waste-free and gives the coffee a more robust taste and smoother texture.
